Health Office
Healthy students are better learners. The mission of the Health Office is to help students overcome health problems and thereby maximize their education.  Here are some Health Office reminders:

---Acetaminophen (generic Tylenol) and ibuprofen are kept in stock in the Health Office and will be administered only with parent permission.  Please initial the medication section on your child's pink emergency card.
---Generally if your child has a cold or a sore throat without a fever they can be at school.  If they have a "heavy" cold and a deep or hacking cough they should stay at home.
---Do not send a child to school with a fever of 101or greater.  Students must be fever free for 24 hrs without the use of fever reducers (Tylenol, ibuprofen) before returning to school.
---Cough drops can be carried by students. They must not share with others.
---Most of the complaints seen in the Health Office are headaches and stomachaches. Many times this is due to the fact that students are not eating breakfast or drinking water.  Please ensure that your child gets a healthy breakfast before school. The school cafeteria is open before school offering breakfast items.
---All medication must be checked into the Health Office. Please see the district policy below.

GPS Health Services - Medication Policy

When it is necessary for a student to take medication during school hours, the following requirements must be met:


  1. Prescription medication must be in the ORIGINAL container with a non-expired prescription label that matches the written physician’s order.

  2. Over-the-counter medications must be in the ORIGINAL container with original package directions.

  3. Age appropriate dosage as stated on the label will be dispensed.

  4. A Medication Permission Consent Form must be signed by the parent/guardian and physician for us to administer medication to the child.

  5. Dosage, time, dates to be given, and the name of the medication must be clearly stated.

  6. All medication must be dropped off and picked up at school by an ADULT only.

  7. It is recommended that when you get a prescription filled at the pharmacy that has to be given at school that you ask the pharmacist to create a “School Bottle”. This is especially important with liquid medications (such as antibiotics) that have to be refrigerated.

  8. All inhalers, self carry or not, must have a pharmacy placed label on it or have the inhaler inside of the box with the pharmacy label. Inhalers not properly labeled are not allowed per district policy. Parents must complete the Consent to Carry Inhalers form and return to the Health Office prior to the student carrying an inhaler on campus.

  9. Medications given three times a day WILL NOT be given at school. Please make arrangements to give these medications before or after school. If a physician puts in writing that a medication must be given during the school day, such as ADHD medication, it will then be given as the doctor directs.

  10. Narcotic pain medication will not be given at school.

  11. Medications brought to school and not meeting the necessary requirements will not be dispensed. The medication will be locked in the office until a parent/guardian verifies the medication, signs the proper forms or takes it home.

  12. Please contact your campus RN regarding further information on inhaler and epi-pens ordered for any student.
